Leopards & Ligers

Leopards

  • Species Name: Panthera pardus
  • Weight: 50 to 70 pounds
  • Carnivore
  • Either Yellow Coat with Black Spots or a Full Black Coat
  • 2 to 4 kittens in a litter

Habitat

  • Africa, the Middle East, Asia
  • Biomes found:
    • Artic & Tundra
    • Grasslands
    • Deserts & Arid
    • Jungle
    • Forests
    • Mountains

Risk Level

  • Near Threatened
  • Currently, the bobcat species, in general, is under the Near Threatened by the IUCN Endangerment Rating. This means a smaller population of panthers is currently in the wild. However, the widespread species population is nearing endangerment and is considered a protected species in many countries.

Ligers

  • Species Name: Panthera Leo x Panthera Tigris 
  • Weight: 700lbs to 1200lbs
  • Carnivore
  • Short Coat with a tufted mane
  • Sterile depending on gender, cannot reproduce naturally.
  • Ligers are not naturally occurring within the wild and are a product of artificial selection. Due to this, they sometimes have health problems and can continue to grow throughout their entire life reaching well over 1000 lbs.

Habitat

  • Only found in Captivity
  • Ligers do not naturally occur in the wild and are only found within civilization as they are a product of artificial breeding between a male lion and a female tiger.

Risk Level

  • Not Applicable
  • Currently, the Liger species, in general, is not listed by the IUCN Endangerment Rating. This is because ligers are an artificial species created by artificial selection between a female tiger and a male lion. This species has never been found in the wild and only in Captivity.
